Reviving cultural space: Cinemas as a specialism
Cultural spaces provide a very real physical connection to collective pasts, and hold memories and architectural ideas worth conserving.
We have worked across many listed cinema projects – The Govan Lyceum, the George in Portobello – all of which are underpinned by our specialist conservation experience and desire to revive places that hold deep community meaning.
We are now pleased to be working with leading cinema architect and consultant Stefanie Fischer, who is widely regarded for transforming many of the UK’s most loved cultural sites. Stefanie’s work in Scotland includes the multi award winning Centenary Project for the Campbeltown Picture House [Category A], which she led from inception to completion while at Burrell Foley Fischer LLP.
Our specialist conservation expertise and capability for reviving civic and community spaces, combined with Stefanie’s cinema experience, enables us to address the challenges and opportunities presented by the upgrading and adaptive reuse of historic cinema buildings.
While a Principal of Burrell Foley Fischer LLP until 2015 and then Consultant until 2020, Stefanie led the practice’s cinema projects.
Projects she led involving works to historic cinemas included:– Norwich Cinema City [Grade I]– Rio Dalston [Grade II]– Cine Lumiere at the Institut Francais, South Kensington [Grade II]– Kino Hawkhurst [Grade II] the first all digital cinema in the UK– Campbeltown Picture House [Category A]
