Stanley Picker House & Gallery
Kingston, London

Conservation works to ensure the long-term vitality of the 20th century buildings.

The vision

The Stanley Picker Trust commissioned us as conservation specialist to prepare a Conservation Management Plan (CMP), aiming to support the long-term maintenance and development of the Picker house and Gallery buildings.

This envisioned strategy seeks to create positive impact on well-being, economic and cultural development, education, and social justice.

The process

Designed in 1965 by the renowned architect Kenneth Wood, the house retains its original period interior and furnishings. The art collection itself, featuring works by eminent artists such as Chagall, Frink, Hepworth, Lowry, and Rodin, was an integral part of the home’s design concept, creating a seamless dialogue between art, architecture, and interior design.

Our Conservation Management Plan provides:

  • An understanding of the history and heritage of the house and gallery, why it matters, and who cares about it.
  • Current threats to the heritage, as well as opportunities for improvement.
  • Factors that influence how it is cared for and managed.
  • Guidance on planning maintenance, conservation and repair works.
  • Potential to improve public access and understanding.
  • Implementation of measures to reduce negative environmental impact and to adapt to the climate crisis.

The conclusion

To date, the trustees have been diligently working to safeguard the future of the house, although it has generally been using a policy of preservation.

Our conservation plan serves as a guideline, shaping the transformative process of the Stanley Picker House and Gallery buildings based on established conservation best practices.
