A home rooted in its place.

We set out to create a home that felt rooted in its place yet contemporary in spirit – a building that engages fully with its landscape while offering calm, comfortable spaces for a couple splitting their time between Balnain and Aberdeen. The design needed to honour the site’s history, reusing granite from the former cottage, while responding to the realities of a changing climate and modern living.
The home is composed of two volumes – one in recycled stone, one in charred timber – linked by a flat-roof circulation space. The stone wing anchors the house to the road, while the timber wing opens to the fields and views beyond.
As the construction evolved, material choices and detailing refined the balance between robustness and warmth. Passive systems, local craftsmanship, and natural light shaped both form and feeling.
The result is a modest, enduring home that belongs to its landscape. It’s practical, efficient, and deeply personal – a place that connects our clients to the land and to each other, season after season.
